The United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) is pleased to announce that Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook, Texas has been selected to host the 2020 Optimist Team Trials. The results from which will be used to determine qualification of certain competitors for summer international teams and the U.S. National Team.
Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) is located on 38 beautifully landscaped acres on Clear Lake which is connected to upper Galveston Bay via channel. LYC hosted the J-70 North American Championship in 2016 and the J-105 North American Championship in 2017. LYC also hosted the USODA Team Race Midwinter Championship in 2014 and 2016.
Sailing conditions on Galveston Bay in the Spring are dominated by a regular south-easterly sea breeze that fills in around noon and lasts until late afternoon. Winds range from 12-16 knots. The tow to the Bay race area is 15-20 minutes.
Lakewood Yacht Club is approximately a 30 minute drive from Houston Hobby (HOU) International Airport. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is located north of Houston and is about a one hour drive from LYC. There are many hotels within a 15 minute drive of the yacht club.
The Clear Lake area offers plenty of attractions for family members. Located 5 minutes from the club, the Kemah Boardwalk offers waterfront restaurants, an amusement park, and shopping. Just 10 minutes from the club is the NASA Space Center Houston which offers family attractions, a space museum, and tours of the Johnson Space Center. Additionally the beaches of Galveston, Moody Gardens, and Schlitterbahn are 30 minutes from the Club on Galveston Island.
